 Kindergarten (cont.)

 During Phonemic Awareness, we will be blending and segmenting (taking apart) words with the short /a/. For example, the 3 sounds /b/-/a/-/t/ blend into “bat” and “hat” can segment into 3 sounds /h/-/a/-/t/.

 

In math lessons will focus on counting 1-12 and using those numbers to make and match sets.   Students will be reading the numerals (1, 2, 3…9, 10) and number words (one…ten).   Kindergarten students will graph favorite activities this month.  Clifford, the Big Red Dog, will help us sort objects by size and length.

 

Our science studies will center on seasonal change and how people, plants and animals prepare for winter.  In social studies students will use the reading topic to extend and explore their understanding  friendship and how friends solve problems.   In January, students will observe Martin Luther King Day and again, tie the meaning of Dr. King’s work to friendship and tolerance. 

Text Box: First Grade wishes you Happy Holidays. We are very busy learning new words. We are learning about r clusters and l clusters. We have started spelling so be looking for a new set of words about every 5 days. We are still practicing our short vowel sounds. We have just started unit 4 in Reading which is called Family and Friends. Here is a list of our high frequency words for this unit. come your people mother children love father picture family today know play friend write she girl sing read car down hear hold hurt learn their walk would In math we have just finished a unit on time to the hour and half hour. This is a skill that needs to be practiced all year. We are working on our addition facts and have started to take timed facts tests. Our goal for the end of the year is to have every student able to complete 50 addition and subtraction problems in 4 minutes or less. Our upcoming units in math are subtraction and grouping to count.
