In third grade, our Reading theme is Animal Habitats. The stories that we will be reading are about how animals live and grow in their environments . A few of the stories will be Nights of the Pufflings , Seal Surfer and Two Days In May. Your child will also be working on Biographies during media and reading.
At the beginning of each story, your child will have vocabulary words that come home each week. Please look over these words and study them with your child.
Your child may switch to another teacher for Guided Reading. Most Guided Reading groups have homework, which is to be completed each night.
In math, we will be finishing our unit on Division. We will then start our unit on Measurement with Statistics. In this unit, they will learn about temperature and measuring with centimeters and inches. Students have learned many ways to solve division problems, such as repeated subtraction, cookies and chips, and arrays. We will be working on this for the next week. Your child takes a facts test at least once a week. This is a timed test in which students compute math facts. Please work with your child at home in studying these facts. They should have a facts study sheet to study as well as flashcards.
In Science, we are learning about forces and motion.
Remember to sign your child’s agenda each night and help them with homework. Students will also need to read for 20 minutes each night. They will have spelling homework Monday thru Thursday night with their spelling test on Friday. They will have Math homework Monday thru Thursday. On Friday, all of their work will come home in their Friday Folder. Please look over the work with your child and sign the sheet. This work needs to be left at home. If you are not sure whether or not they have homework, you can check the homework hotline each night after 4:00 p.m. If you would like to meet with your child’s teacher please call the school to set up a conference. Since the cold weather has arrived please make sure that your child remembers a jacket.
