Reading The February theme is Sunshine and Raindrops. We will read stories and fables that feature weather and seasons. Students will work on recognizing and writing the consonants L, l, K, k Q, and q and identifying the sounds for those letters. They will also tackle the second vowel sound: short i (as in kit). In Phonemic Awareness, we will continue blending and segmenting (taking apart) words with the short a and i and reading their word “families”. (A word “family” rhymes such as pig, fig, dig or bag, sag, tag...) Students will utilize these skills in phonics by reading and spelling these 3 letter words.

Math Lessons will focus on counting and recognizing numbers 1-13 and using those numbers to make and match sets. Students will be comparing the weight and capacity of objects and begin recording data using tally marks.

Science and Social Studies In Social Studies students will learn about the civic observances of Black History Month and President’s Day.

First Grade has been busy over the last few months. We have learned how to count coins up to $1.00. We will be investigating fact families and starting a new unit on measurement.
In Science, we are learning about ponds and life cycles. We now have an aquarium in the first grade pod with fish and a tadpole.
In Reading, we have been working on contractions and long vowel sounds i and a spelled with the cvce spelling pattern (like, cave). We will be introducing long e and long u. We will also be introducing vowel pairs ee, ea, ai, and ay. Please have your child practice the books they bring home each night and don’t forget to check the homework hotline for spelling words.
In Social Studies, we will be looking at how our country began and talking about George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson. We will also be studying wants and needs.
Don’t forget our Valentine’s Day concert and our Fox in Socks service learning project.
