Second Grade News
Reading- We are just about to start our fifth reading theme, Family Time. In this theme, we will be reading about children’s experiences with their families. We will also be discussing how families are alike and different. Students will be reading the stories Brothers and Sisters, Jalapeno Bagels, Carousel, and Thunder Cake. Students will be working on the comprehension skills making generalizations, following directions, making judge- ments, and sequence of events. Throughout the month, talk with you child about the characters we are reading about. Ask how these characters are like your family and how they are different. Remember to read for 20 minutes every night.
Math- We are just finishing our unit on geometric shapes. We will be starting our unit on three-digit addition and subtraction next. Students will continue using the expanded algorithm to add and regrouping to subtract. After three digit adding and subtracting, we will start measurement and then three-dimensional shapes. Do not forget to con tinue review time and money skills at home. Students should also keep practicing their math facts.
Writing - The second graders are becoming great writers. Encourage your child to write about things that they have done or read. They can write their favorite part or a summary of a story. We have also worked on writing friendly letters. Let your child write a let- ter to a friend or family member, or even a character in a book.
Social Studies- When we start Social Studies again, we will be looking at the geography of the Americas. We will be looking at where the Americas are on the globe and identifying the location of Central and South America.
Science- We have been continuing with our unit on weather. We have already covered informa- tion on temperature and wind, and will now be looking at some more exciting weather topics. We will be looking at thunder, lightning, hurricanes and tornadoes, and finding what causes each. These are words that you child has learned or will be learning in second grade, and should be able to read automatically. Please read these words with your child and practice any words they struggle to read.
**When your child is reading to you, make sure that they are reading fluently and accurately. Their reading should be smooth and at a steady pace. They should also be careful not to make any mistakes.
**Make sure your child is continuing to add to their reading log. Almost a third of the second graders have earned their reading medals. Let’s see if everyone can earn their medal by the end of the year.
**Students should also be working toward passing their facts tests. Remember, students have 5 minutes to complete 90 problems. Our goal is to have all students pass the addition and subtraction tests by the end of the year. |
