Text Box: Kindergarten Students will work on recognizing and writing the consonants Dd, Zz, Xx, Oo, Ww, Yy, and Ee and identifying the sounds for those letters. They will also tackle the second vowel sound: short o (as in hot) and the short e sound (as in net). In Phonemic Awareness, we will continue blending and segmenting (taking apart) words with the short /a/, /i/, /o/, and e and reading their word “families”. (A word “family” rhymes such as pig, fig, dig… or bag, sag, tag…..) Students will extend these skills into phonics by reading and spelling these 3 letter words. Math Lessons will focus on counting and recognizing numbers 1-15 and using those numbers to make and match sets. Kindergarteners will also begin to solve simple story problems by making combinations of 3, 4 and 5 with pictures and objects. (For example: 1 and 3, 2 and 2, 0 and 4, 3 and 1 are all combinations of 4). We will also be learning the name and value of pennies, nickels, and dimes. Students will be exposed to quarter, half-dollar, and dollar as well. Science and Social Studies As we move into March, our science and social studies centers will be about seasonal change, weather and elements, care of the environment, plants, animals and their offspring and habitats. Text Box: FIRST GRADE NEWS March  This month we will be starting our Theme called We Can Work It Out. It will have stories that stress conflict resolution. We will be learning about vowel pairs oa, ow, oo, ew, ue, ou, ie, and igh. We will be concentrating on proper nouns and pronouns. In math, we will be starting a unit on measurement. In Science we will be beginning a unit entitled Balance and Motion. Please remember to help your child practice their addition and subtraction facts and keep reading those paper books.
