May Curriculum

Spring is Here! is this month’s reading theme. The children will enjoy the Read Aloud and Big Book stories about seasonal change and many spring activities. Each class will be planting seeds and observing other spring changes. We will be practicing sequencing story events and predicting outcomes. Students will meet the Text Box: Pre-Kindergarten News
As our school year comes to a close, we are busier than ever. The children are learning and growing so much. Our goal is for all children to be prepared for kindergarten. We continue to work on the letters and their sounds. As you talk with your child, ask him/her to name the letters you spy around the house. Name an object and have your child make the sound the object begins with.
We are also learning to read color words, number words, and some high frequency words. All of the children received words to cut up, along with a baggie so they can practice them and become a Word Wizard. They were also given a game board sheet so they can play a game with the words. Each Thursday, the children will have an opportunity to read the words in the classroom for their chance to become a Word Wizard.
We are reading lots of books in the classroom. The children have learned the difference between non-fiction (true/informational) and fiction (make-believe). They have been sequencing the events in fiction stories. In the non-fiction books, we have been sequencing the stages in the life cycles of butterflies, frogs, chicks, robins, and people. Ask your child to sequence the events after you read to him/her. Also ask him/her to name the characters, setting, problem, and solution in the fictional stories you read. The children do a wonderful job with this.
