Maple Elementary School

                                    Second Grade News

We are just starting our sixth and final theme, Talent Show.  There are three stories in the theme, The Art Lesson, Moses Goes to a Concert, and The School  Mural.  The comprehension skills for these stories are Author’s Viewpoint, Noting Details, and Problem Solving.  We will also be discussing what special talents each student has throughout the theme. As always, please remember to read with your child for at least 20 minutes every night.

In math, we are just finishing up with fractions and will be starting to look at the weight and capacity of different objects.  When we finish with measurement we will be taking a beginning look at multiplying and dividing.  Please continue to work on your child’s math facts every night.

In Social Studies, we will be looking at the cultures of Asia.  We will be focusing on China, India, and Japan.  We will be comparing the cultures to each other, to the others we have studied this year, and to our own.

We are just finishing up our science unit on butterflies.  We learned quite a bit about how a butterfly lives and grows.  Although this was our final science unit for the year, Please continue your discussions with your child.

In addition to studying math facts and reading for at least 20 minutes, students will have written math homework almost every night.  Students will also have written spelling homework every night except Friday.  On some nights, your child will bring home a black and white photocopied book. Please read this book with your child as it will contain many of the skills we are working on for that week. Be sure to check your child’s agenda to see their assignments.
